In Scotland there are many secondary roads of varying widths and traffic capabilities with some that are narrow single track in sections and this is not shown on the National Geographic map which although it has designations per the map legend for them they are not shown as such on the map.It is also worthless to find locations of interest which one would expect with an "adventure" map. The index covers castles and towns but omits a place like Rothiemurchus, the best wildlife preserve in all of the United Kingdom with 10,000 hectares of Ancient Caledonian Forest, Lochs, Rivers, Glens, Mountains, and wild landscapes.I also purchased the Michelin map of Scotland and it is more legible and provides a more accurate depiction of road types and conditions to expect.The map that provides the most information and is the easiest to use while navigating in a car is the Philip's Navigator Scotland. It takes a bit more space but provides the ability to have a single 8.5 x 11.75 inch page for a section of the country to refer to rather than a large map that is more than 4 times as large to have manage inside a car. The Pilip's Navigator clearly shows how to get to Rothiemurchus which is off the A9.
I bought a Michelin map for a trip to Scotland but its huge, overhanging my dining room table on all sides. Realizing that it will not work well as an on-the-go map in a vehicle I bought this to use in the car. Very nice quality with coated paper making it water-resistant and tear resistant. I use the Michelin map for pre-trip planning, marking the various sites I want to visit but it will stay in the hotel room to be consulted only there.
Map is made of some kind of covered paper which feels lovely in the hand, and which re folds wonderfully. Resists spills and smudges. If you want an overview of Scotland, with the inhabited areas shown in yellow, it's The map. If you want maps of cities and their streets this one is not detailed enough for you. The legend at the side (an inch equals 100 miles etc.) shows one inch to equal 20 miles. Scotland is way smaller than American's think.
I always buy the National Geographic Maps before I go on a trip of any kind. They may cost a few dollars more than the other brands, but the special tear and water resistant paper is worth it. No more fiddling around with the maps on thin cheap paper that always get torn and are impossible to refold. Always good to have a dependable paper map when you GPS directs you to an empty field instead of your destination.
Well done map; wish it showed some of the less commonly traveled roads. Other than that I'm satisfied.
